Fabric Screen Cutting in Japan
Author's Description: This man is actually using a very fine tool to punch holes in a very light material in order to make patterns. This material will then be used to apply dye on fabric. The time this work takes is crazy. This was taken in Kanazawa's castle during an exhibition of Japanese fine crafts.
EDOKOMON- Japanese Kimono Printing Process
Author's description: In Edo era, the people were prohibited from wearing showy kimono. Therefore the kimono of small pattern to look plain in a long distance was popular. The meanings of the pattern are different each. It is said that it is smart (粋 iki)" to wear the kimono of the pattern that accepted the situation.
The video is in Japanese. It shows good footage of how kimono fabric is prepared using silk-screening, printing and dyeing.
