As I first told you weeks ago, Daughtry’s “Home” was unveiled Thursday as the song that will accompany the eliminated contestants’ goodbye videos.
Last year’s song, Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” was the #1 song of 2006. However, “Idol” reaped no benefits because Powter was signed to Warner Bros. Now, RCA/19, the official “Idol” record label, will be the beneficiary.
However, the people at 19 say that had nothing to do with the choice.
According to “Variety,” In October, Iain Pirie, head of 19 Entertainment U.S., had a meeting with 19 executive and “Idol” Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe. At the meeting, Pirie played some tracks from Daughtry’s upcoming album. When Lythgoe heard “Home,” he called “Idol” guru Simon Fuller right away and they both agreed it would be perfect.
“Home” was written by Chris and it was the song that convinced Clive Davis to let him make the kind of CD he wanted to.
However, according to “Variety,” it still hasn’t been decided if “Home” will be released as a single. It’s possible that “Over You” could be the next song released.
“Over You” is a great song (my favorite on the CD), but I can’t believe they won’t take advantage of the “Idol” phenomenon. And since digital sales are now figured in the charts, the fans may make the decision for them anyway. It would be better to save “Over You” for later.
Not that Daughtry needs any more promotion. The CD just went double platinum.
I’m curious, though, what Chris thinks of his deeply personal song—that he hoped to be released as a tribute to the troops—being used for the eliminations. Especially now that there are rumblings he’s uncomfortable with his “Idol” past…
