The Top 8 Results Show: Ryan Delivers a Surprise for Simon

Let’s do this…

9:00 Dramatic taped intro with contestant backstage comments…Lil was crying backstage…Why did Scott feel like he had to talk back?...Opening Credits…

9:01 Ryan descends the stairs…Mario Lopez in the house…He tells us what we’re getting tonight and Flo Rida gets lots of screaming…Ryan intros the judges…Why is Paula wearing gloves up to her elbows?...Randy says he was disappointed with last night…Kara says there are early front-runners having an identity crisis. Clearly she’s talking about Lil…Ryan plays a clip of the song that topped the charts the year Simon was born. It’s Frankie Avalon’s “Venus.” But then the doors open and Frankie’s actually there singing. The judges stand for him and Simon is genuinely shocked. But what is the point here? None of those kids in the audience have any idea who he is…Simon seems to actually be enjoying it. And he sounds good…Frankie says the song was from 1959. Ryan teases that means there’s a 50th birthday coming up, but Simon says he was born in 1969. And then he changes the subject by saying Ryan and Frankie look like twins…

9:07 Oh Good Lord! The group song is “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” from 2002, the year that “Idol” was born…As flat as Lil sounds, this can’t possibly be lip synched, can it?...Adam is clearly the favorite…Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is live because someone just forgot the words and I think it was Allison. She confused “Set me free” and “Won’t you stay.” I’m sure the producers would use that as an excuse to do some more lip synching…If another girl goes home tonight, they’re going to be in real trouble with these things starting next week…Break…

Why can’t we just cut those out? I would’ve rather heard Frankie sing again…
